Tiny Home Interior Design Ideas, Storage and Photos

Ceiling height, sight lines, built-in joinery and transforming furniture that make a small interior feel generous rather than cramped. A tiny home feels small for reasons that have little to do with floor area. Low ceilings, dark surfaces, blocked sight lines and freestanding furniture make thirty square metres oppressive, while volume, light and continuity make the same area feel like a well designed apartment. Every good tiny interior spends its budget on those four things before it spends anything on features. Volume comes first. A raked or vaulted ceiling, a high window above eye level, and a single tall element such as a ladder or a full height cupboard give the eye somewhere to travel upward. Keeping one long sight line unbroken from the entry to the far window is the single most effective trick available, which is why bathrooms and storage belong along one side rather than across the middle. Storage must be built in and it must be everywhere. Drawers under the floor, a bench seat that lifts, stairs with treads that open, a full height pantry beside the fridge, hooks and rails on the backs of doors, and a dedicated place for every single object that lives...

Classic and modern coastal homes, dune gardens, decks and ocean-front living. Use this concept as a starting point: note the proportions between built form and greenery, where shade and shelter sit, how paths and paved areas move people through the space, and which materials repeat to hold the whole scheme together.

Every visual on this site is a design idea created for Home Design Photos. Browse the rest of the Beach House Designs collection, or open the complete image catalogue to see every home, garden, pool, pergola, furniture, lighting and beach house concept in one place.

Courtyard Garden Design Ideas and Photos for Townhouses

Small enclosed gardens that feel like rooms — light, reflection, green walls, one strong tree and lighting that makes them work at night.

A townhouse courtyard is usually surrounded on three sides, overlooked from above and starved of direct sun for part of the day. Those constraints define the design. Rather than fighting for a lawn or a border, the successful approach treats the courtyard as an interior: a floor, walls, a ceiling of sky or canopy, and furniture arranged as it would be indoors.

Light is the resource to manage. Pale paving, light rendered or painted walls and a mirror or polished surface on the darkest elevation bounce daylight into the space and into the rooms behind it. A pond or water bowl adds reflected movement across a shaded wall. Avoid dark paving in a shaded courtyard, because it absorbs the little light there is and makes the space feel like a well.

Green has to work vertically. Espaliered citrus or ornamental pear on wires, climbers such as star jasmine or Boston ivy on a stainless mesh, a green wall panel with proper irrigation on the least useful wall, and generous planters rather than small pots that dry out in a day. One multi stem tree — Japanese maple, magnolia, olive or crepe myrtle depending on light and climate — gives the courtyard a canopy and stops it feeling like a box.

Then design for evening use, because that is when courtyards are occupied. Warm hidden lighting grazing the walls and up through the tree, a lantern or lamp at seat height, built-in bench seating along one wall to save floor space, and a table sized for four rather than eight. Heating in the form of a wall mounted radiant heater extends the season. A well resolved courtyard becomes the most used room in a townhouse, not the least.
